Using technology to motivate, engage and support learning

Lakeside Center for Autism and neuridevelopment firmly believes in the use of technology to support participation and learning. This video is a reflection of our forward thinking using technology to support motivation and learning in children we see at our clinic.

Assistive Technology

Assistive technology (AT) is technology used by individuals with disabilities in order to perform functions that might otherwise be difficult or impossible.  Assistive technology is not always high-tech.  It can be anything homemade, purchased off the shelf, modified, or commercially available which is used to help a child perform some task of daily living.  AT can be as simple as using a visual schedule to reduce the anxiety caused by transitions or to remind a child what comes next.  Assistive technology is an umbrella term that encompasses techniques that help increase a child’s independent participation in home, school, and community environments.

For example, assistive technology can help a child to:

  • participate more actively in family, school and community activities
  • play successfully with toys and other children
  • communicate his or her needs and ideas
  • make choices
  • move independently
